CHICAGO — Public health officials say swine flu is widespread in Illinois, affecting more than half the state.

But when vaccinations against it become available next month, many residents will be turned away until high-risk people are served.

That’s the message Illinois Department of Public Health officials put out during a teleconference Thursday.

According to the department’s Dr. Craig Conover, almost all circulating flu virus in Illinois and the rest of the country is swine flu, not seasonal flu.

To avoid both types of flu, Public Health Director Damon Arnold is urging Illinoisans to follow the three C’s – clean your hands with soap and water or gel, cover your mouth when you cough, and contain germs by staying home if you’re sick.
